Causes of foot and ankle injuries at work

Our ankles and feet can sometimes be taken for granted. However, these are the body parts that help us to move around each day. Unfortunately, the feet and ankles are susceptible to injuries in the workplace. Such injuries can make it difficult for workers to continue their roles and earn an income.

What are some of the more common causes of foot and ankle injuries in the workplace

Slips, trips and falls

Slips, trips and falls are the most common cause of foot and ankle injuries at work. Millions of workers are injured this way every single year.

There are a number of steps employers can take to try and prevent falls from occurring. For instance, they can ensure that workspaces are free from obstacles and tripping hazards. It’s also possible to install anti-slip flooring in warehouses, factories and other settings.

If a worker does lose their balance and falls, this can place a lot of pressure on the foot and ankle. In some cases, the ankle might dislocate or break. Serious foot injuries can take several months to recover from.

Other causes of foot and ankle injuries

Slips and falls aren’t the only cause of foot and ankle injuries. Injuries can occur simply because workers spend a lot of time on their feet each day. Employers must ensure that workers are being given adequate rest breaks. Standing for more than 4-5 hours at a time can result in damage to the feet.

If you’ve been injured at work, you may be entitled to financial compensation. This cannot reverse the injury but it can help alleviate some financial pressure. Seek legal guidance to find out more about workers’ compensation.
