Linemen risk danger to keep us comfortable

Linemen have the difficult task of ensuring that electrical lines are in working condition no matter the type of weather they face. This is a difficult task for many reasons, so all workers doing this should be prepared to remain safe.

There are a few primary hazards for linemen. One of these is the high voltage they’re working with. Another is the height of these lines. The lines’ location, often near busy roads, is also a hazard.

What can linemen do to remain safe?

One of the most important things for linemen is having proper safety training. This is up to the employer. It isn’t enough to tell the linemen what to do. They must be taught the appropriate methods for working, and there should be continuing education about these safety measures.

Proper equipment must be present and used for all jobs. This includes having cones and other devices that alert drivers to linemen on the side of the road. Wearing a helmet, gloves and shoes is also critical for these workers.

While it’s essential to work as diligently as possible, linemen shouldn’t ever try to rush. It’s possible to make safety-critical errors when rushing, so it’s better to take your time to get the job done correctly.

Linemen who suffer injuries while doing their job should ensure they get the proper care. Workers’ compensation coverage should take care of all the costs associated with the accident. It may also provide other benefits, such as partial wage replacement. Some workers will have to appeal a decision if it’s made incorrectly, so be sure to plan for that possibility.
