What are the biggest warehouse hazards?

Any company that sells a large quantity of goods has at least one warehouse. The warehouse offers a safe spot for the goods to be stored until distribution.

Running an efficient warehouse requires a lot of manpower. Unfortunately, working in this kind of environment can be dangerous. What are some of the biggest hazards that warehouse workers face?

Improper storage

To be viable, warehouses have to store a large quantity of goods and materials. There is a skill in storing large quantities safely, particularly when goods and products are placed on high shelves. If goods are piled up too high or heavy items are placed at a height, this can put the workers underneath at risk. Even a smaller item falling from a height can result in severe injuries.

Machinery

One of the most notable pieces of machinery in warehouses is the forklift. In large warehouses, there may even be several. Forklifts make easy work of heavy lifting, but they can also be dangerous. It takes specific training to be able to operate a forklift safely, and this is something that all operators should have access to.

Hazardous materials

Depending on the nature of the business, some of the materials stored in warehouses may be hazardous. For instance, there may be barrels filled with toxic chemicals. Some of the materials may be highly flammable. If these materials leak or are not stored appropriately, they can become very dangerous for workers.

If you’ve been injured on the job, you may be entitled to workers’ compensation. Seek legal guidance to find out whether or not you qualify.
